dig blog post 3

Monday 17th was our first day at Holton Lee. Digging this new site was a last-minute arrangement as the Roman Road dig finished earlier than expected.

 de-turfing

The day started with the arduous job of cutting turf and topsoil from the three trenches we laid out on the medieval site found by Bournemouth University in 2000. By the end of the day the trowels had come out and some bits of medieval pottery had emerged.

We are hopeful that we will find out more about the medieval period at Holton. Holton is the oldest continuously occupied place in the parish of WarehamSt Martin, being mentioned in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086)
