The project comes to an end in December, and we are holding a celebration event on Saturday 20 October, 2-5pm, at Sandford Middle School. The afternoon will begin with a drama production by pupils of Sandford Primary School. The play, The History of Sandford School, tells the story of the first hundred years of the school. It was written by a former head teacher, Jane Johnson, and first performed in the 1980s. José Hedley and Judith Bowie, former teachers at the school, will be producing it.
The project booklet, Sandford Heritage: History and Wildlife of a Dorset Parish, will also be launched. Written by 14 community volunteers, it gives a fascinating insight into the village and the area and includes a DVD of local people talking about their memories of living and working there. The costs of producing the 72-page booklet are covered by the project funding, but donations are invited to the Sandford Heritage Community Group. From Monday 22 October, the booklet can be obtained from McColl's, Sandford Road, and Sandford Pharmacy, St Helen's Road.
There will also be displays of findings from the project, activities for all the family on wildlife themes, and refreshments will be available. Admission is free.
A Sandford Heritage Community Group has been set up with the initial aim of applying for funding for a future project. This will build on and develop the work of the current project, and will include: establishing heritage trails in the area with interpretation boards and leaflets, more work on the wildlife, history and archaeology of the area, and widening community participation. The group needs to raise funds in order to attract match-funding. Further details will be posted soon.
